GEORGE VANCE JOHNSTON died at the Carlisle Hospital yesterday at 4 a.m. He was born March 9, 1835, the son of John and Mary Vance Johnston, in Southampton township, Franklin county. He was educated in the common schools, the Shippensburg Academy and the Shade Gap Academy. For some years he was engaged in the hardware business in Shippensburg in partnership with John E. Johnston and John Graybill. After spending time in Rock Island, Ill., he purchased his father's farm in Southampton township, Franklin county, where he spent the greater part of his life until 1906, when he moved to Shippensburg. In 1871 he was married to Abigail M. Rankin, daughter of Dr. William Rankin of Shippensburg. He was active in Republican politics in Franklin county, and served as county commissioner from 1893 to 1896. He was a member of the session of the Presbyterian Church in Shippensburg. He is survived by one son, William R. Johnston of Shippensburg. He will be buried at Spring Hill cemetery from his late residence, 505 West King street, Shippensburg, on Friday at 2 p.m.
