  [S1] Newspaper Clipping, 29 Apr 1892, The News-Chronicle. Death of John B. Bratton, Esq. John B. Bratton, for many years the editor and proprietor of the American Volunteer, died Wednesday afternoon at his residence in Carlisle, in his seventy-sixth year. He was a native of Mifflin County. He was State Printer over fifty years ago. In 1845 in connection with the late Jerome K. Boyer, he purchased the Carlisle American Volunteer from the late Goerge Sanderson, afterward for many years editor and proprietor of the Lnacaster Intelligencer. Mr. Boyer only remained on the Volunteer for about a year, and Mr. Bratton retained possession of it until 1878, a period of thirty three years, when he disposed of it to the Hon. Samuel M. Wherry, who sold it in 1879 to J. Zeamer, Esq., its present editor. Mr. Bratton was an able, bold and fearless and aggressive writer and under his editorship the Volunteer became one of the leading and most influential county papers in Pennsylvania. Mr. Bratton was twice married, His first wife was a daughter of the late George W. Boyd, and his second a daughter of the late James R. Boyd, of Harrisburg. [Note, this is incorrect, as His first wife was the daughter of Jame R. Boyd, and his second the daughter of George Boyd.] He was a devoted husband and father, firm and devoted in his attachments and had hosts of friends all over the State. He was a Democrat of the straightest sect.He held the position of postmaster of Carlisle under the administration of President Buchanan, and was for years president of the school board of Carlisle. His name had frequently been mentioned in connection with Congress, the State Senate and other important positions. In personal appearance Mr. Bratton was strikingly handsome, being above the medium height, straight as an arrow and compactly built. He leaves a wife and five children to whom his loss will be sincerely mourned by many others who knew and appreciated his genuine worth and merit. The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock.
