McFarland Residents of West Chester were shocked to learn of the death of Charles Tatman McFarland, of South High street, who passed away late yesterday afternoon after an illness of but a few days with pneumonia. Mr. McFarland was on the streets as late as Wednesday night last and apparently in good health, but on Thursday he became ill, and while symptoms of pneumonia were manifest, there was no seeming cause of alarm. On Friday night he appeared much better but a sudden relapse came and almost without warning the heart action ceased. The deceased was born in West Chester and was the eldest child of the late David N. and Mary M. McFarland. He was 54 years of age. He was educated in the famous Hunter Worrall Academy, which used to be located at the old post office building on South Church street. Finishing his education he later established the first steam luandry in this place, which he and his brother-in-law, Isaac G. Reynolds, conductd with great success for a number of years and in 1911 sold the business to the present owners, Jay H. and Rodney Jefferis. After a visit to the Pacific coast, Mr. McFarland returned and started in business with Mr. Reynolds, the Mitchell Specialty Company, with headquarters in Philadelphia where the manufacture of auto supplies is conducted. Until his death, Mr. McFarland was active in this business. He was of a quiet disposition, and those he had as acquaintances realized in him a true friend. He was a member of the West Chester Club and fthe Est Chester Fire Department. He married Miss Julia Bonsall, of Philadelphia, her death occurring several years ago. Two sons survive him, David M., connected with the Atlas Powder Co., of Tamaqua, and Julian B., a student of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A brother, George K., is of the banking firm of McFarland & Haines, and there is a sister, Elizabeth, wife of Isaac G. Reynolds.
